Desofam 0.03mg/0.15mg Tablet, made by Zafa Pharmaceutical Labortories Ltd, is a combined oral contraceptive. Its active ingredient is Combined Oral Contraceptive 0.03mg/0.15mg, and it is used for contraception, irregular periods, painful or heavy periods and acne. Pack size: 1×28 tablets.

Uses of Desofam 0.03mg/0.15mg Tablet

Desofam 0.03mg/0.15mg Tablet is a pill containing an oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) and a progestogen, used mainly to prevent pregnancy. Taken correctly it is very reliable. Doctors also prescribe it to regulate irregular periods, ease heavy or painful periods and, with certain brands, to help improve acne. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, so condoms are still needed for that.

Ethinylestradiol and the progestogen work together to stop the ovaries releasing an egg each month. The progestogen also thickens the mucus at the neck of the womb, making it hard for sperm to get through, and thins the womb lining so a fertilised egg is less likely to implant.

Side effects of Desofam 0.03mg/0.15mg Tablet often settle within the first few months. The more common ones are:

• Nausea
• Breast tenderness
• Spotting or bleeding between periods
• Headache
• Mood changes

Seek urgent medical help for pain or swelling in one leg, chest pain or sudden breathlessness, a sudden severe headache, problems with vision or speech, or weakness on one side of the body, as these can be signs of a blood clot or stroke.

Precautions and warnings

• It is not suitable for smokers over 35, or for women with a history of blood clots, stroke, heart disease or migraine with aura.
• Tell your doctor or pharmacist about high blood pressure, liver disease, diabetes complications or breast cancer.
• Some medicines, including rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin and St John’s wort, can make the pill less effective, so use extra protection and ask for advice.
• Vomiting or severe diarrhoea can stop the pill being absorbed, so follow the missed-pill advice in the leaflet.
• It is not usually started while breastfeeding a young baby, and should be stopped if you become pregnant.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it in the original pack until use. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
