About TyphoidTyphoid (enteric fever) is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, spread through contaminated food and water. It is common in Pakistan, and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) typhoid has made correct antibiotic choice more important than ever.Typical symptoms include a fever that rises over several days, headache, weakness, stomach pain, loss of appetite and constipation or diarrhoea. A blood culture or other test ordered by a doctor confirms the diagnosis.Medicines used for TyphoidTyphoid is treated with antibiotics chosen by a doctor, often based on local resistance patterns. Medicines used include azithromycin, cefixime, ceftriaxone and, for resistant cases, carbapenems given in hospital. Paracetamol is commonly used to control fever. Always finish the full course, even when the fever settles.When to see a doctorSee a doctor if a fever lasts more than three days, or urgently if there is severe stomach pain, vomiting, confusion, bleeding or blood in the stool.
