Medicines for Fungal Infection

About Fungal InfectionFungal infections are common in Pakistan’s hot, humid climate. They include ringworm (tinea), athlete’s foot, jock itch, nail infections and yeast infections such as vaginal and oral thrush.Skin infections cause an itchy, red, ring-shaped or scaly rash, often in skin folds. Thrush causes white patches in the mouth or itching and white discharge in the vagina.Medicines used for Fungal InfectionMild skin infections respond to antifungal creams such as clotrimazole, terbinafine or miconazole used for the full course. Widespread, scalp or nail infections need tablets such as terbinafine, itraconazole or fluconazole prescribed by a doctor. Keeping skin clean and dry and not sharing towels prevent spread. When to see a doctorSee a doctor if a rash spreads despite treatment, keeps coming back, affects the scalp or nails, or if you have diabetes. Avoid steroid creams on fungal rashes unless prescribed, as they can make the infection worse. This page is for general information only. Many of these medicines need a prescription; please use them only on the advice of a doctor or pharmacist, who can choose the right medicine and dose for you.
