Uses of Santodex 5ml Drops

Santodex 5ml Drops eye drops and eye ointment are used to treat bacterial infections of the eye and eyelid, such as bacterial conjunctivitis and blepharitis. As an injection, it is used in hospital for serious infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas, such as blood, chest, abdominal and urinary infections. An inhaled form is used for chest infections in people with cystic fibrosis.

How Santodex 5ml Drops works

Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It binds to the part of the bacterial cell that makes proteins, causing faulty proteins to be produced, which kills the bacteria. It is particularly effective against Pseudomonas and other Gram-negative bacteria.

Possible side effects

Used as eye drops or ointment, Santodex 5ml Drops usually causes only mild, local effects such as:

• Eye irritation, stinging or itching
• Redness of the eye or eyelid
• Watery eyes
• Brief blurred vision after use

Stop the drops and see a doctor for eye pain, swelling of the eyelids or face, or worsening vision. With injections, report ringing in the ears, hearing loss, dizziness or reduced urine straight away.

Precautions and warnings

• Do not wear contact lenses while treating an eye infection, and do not let the dropper tip touch the eye.
• See a doctor if the eye infection has not improved after two days.
• Injections can affect the kidneys and hearing, so blood levels and kidney function are checked during treatment, especially in older people.
• Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, hearing problems or myasthenia gravis, or take diuretics or other antibiotics.
• Finish the full course prescribed, and tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as injections can affect an unborn baby’s hearing.
