Uses of Valcyte 450 mg Coated Tablets

Valcyte 450 mg Coated Tablets is used to prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in people who have had an organ transplant, as their immune system is suppressed and CMV can cause serious illness. It is also used to treat CMV retinitis, an eye infection that can threaten sight, in people with AIDS. Treatment is supervised by a specialist team with regular blood tests.

How Valcyte 450 mg Coated Tablets works

Valganciclovir is converted in the body to ganciclovir, which is taken up by cells infected with CMV. There it blocks the viral DNA polymerase enzyme, stopping the virus from copying its genetic material. This keeps the infection under control while the immune system recovers or is supported.

Possible side effects

Because Valcyte 450 mg Coated Tablets can affect the bone marrow, some side effects show up mainly on blood tests. Common effects include:

• Low white blood cell count
• Anaemia
• Diarrhoea
