Uses of Schazobutol 400mg Tablet

Schazobutol 400mg Tablet is used together with other medicines, such as isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide, to treat tuberculosis (TB) of the lungs or other parts of the body. Using several TB medicines at once makes treatment more effective and helps stop the bacteria becoming resistant. It is also used for some other mycobacterial infections, for example Mycobacterium avium complex.

Ethambutol blocks an enzyme TB bacteria need to build arabinogalactan, a key part of their cell wall. With a weakened wall the bacteria cannot grow and multiply, allowing the other TB medicines and the immune system to clear the infection.

Possible side effects

The side effect to watch most closely with Schazobutol 400mg Tablet involves the eyes. Common effects include:

• Changes in colour vision, especially red and green
• Blurred or reduced vision
• Nausea or loss of appetite
• Stomach upset
• Joint pain

Stop taking it and see your doctor at once for any change in vision, including blurring, reduced colour vision or blind spots. Get urgent help for a severe rash, fever with peeling skin, or swelling of the face.

Precautions and warnings

• Take it every day exactly as prescribed for the whole course, which usually lasts several months; stopping early can cause drug-resistant TB.
• Your eyesight will usually be checked before and during treatment, and any change in vision should be reported immediately.
• Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, gout or existing eye problems, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Avoid alcohol during TB treatment, as other TB medicines in your regimen can affect the liver.
• Antacids containing aluminium can reduce its absorption, so keep a gap between them.
