Uses of Preglan-E2 Tablet

Preglan-E2 Tablet is used in hospital to soften and open the cervix so that labour can begin, usually when a pregnancy has gone past the due date or when there is a medical reason to deliver the baby. It is given as a vaginal gel, tablet or slow-release insert and is used only by obstetric staff with careful monitoring.

How Preglan-E2 Tablet works

Dinoprostone is a man-made form of prostaglandin E2, a substance the body naturally produces at the start of labour. It softens and thins the cervix, a process called ripening, and encourages the womb to begin contracting.

Possible side effects

With Preglan-E2 Tablet, some women notice effects such as:

• Nausea or vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Fever
• Vaginal warmth or irritation
• Strong or frequent contractions

It is used only with monitoring of mother and baby. Tell staff at once about very strong, painful or continuous contractions, heavy bleeding or breathlessness.

Precautions and warnings

• It is given only by obstetric staff in hospital, with monitoring of the baby’s heart rate and contractions.
• Tell the team if you have asthma, glaucoma, epilepsy, or heart, liver or kidney disease.
• Let staff know about any previous caesarean section or other surgery on the womb.
• It is not used together with oxytocin at the same time.
• It is not used if there are signs that the baby is distressed or that labour must not be induced.
