Ringer’s lactate contains sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride in amounts close to those in blood plasma, so it restores fluid volume without greatly upsetting the body’s salt balance. Its lactate is converted by the liver into bicarbonate, which helps correct mild acidity in the blood.
