Vaxem Hib Injection, made by Novartis Pharma (pakistan)ltd, is a conjugate bacterial vaccine. Its active ingredient is Hib Vaccine, and it is used for prevention of Hib infections, meningitis, pneumonia and epiglottitis. Pack size: 1 prefilled syringe x 0.5ml injection.

Uses of Vaxem Hib Injection

Vaxem Hib Injection protects babies and young children against infection with Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), a bacterium that can cause meningitis, pneumonia, blood infection and epiglottitis (dangerous swelling in the throat). In Pakistan it is part of the routine immunisation programme, usually given as part of a combined (pentavalent) vaccine. It does not protect against flu.

How Vaxem Hib Injection works

The vaccine contains part of the sugar coating of the Hib bacterium joined to a protein. This combination trains a young child’s immune system to make protective antibodies, so it can quickly fight off the real bacteria if exposed.

Possible side effects

Most children have only mild reactions to Vaxem Hib Injection, such as:

• Soreness, redness or swelling where the injection was given
• Mild fever
• Irritability
• Reduced appetite

Precautions and warnings
