Ziac DS

Ziac DS contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Made by Polyfine, it is prescribed for typhoid fever, urinary tract infections, throat and tonsil infections, ear infections, chest infections and uncomplicated gonorrhoea. Pack size: 30ml syrup.

Uses of Ziac DS

Ziac DS is used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to cefixime. In Pakistan it is widely prescribed for typhoid fever, and it is also used for urinary tract infections, sore throat and tonsillitis, middle ear infections, bronchitis and some sexually transmitted infections. It does not work against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How Ziac DS works

Cefixime stops bacteria from building their protective cell wall. Without a stable wall the bacteria break down and die, which allows the body to clear the infection. Symptoms often start to improve within a few days, but the infection is only fully treated when the whole course is finished.

Possible side effects

Most people take Ziac DS without problems. The more common side effects are usually mild and include:

• Loose stools or diarrhoea
• Stomach pain or indigestion
• Nausea
• Headache
• Mild skin rash or itching

Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you notice swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, a severe rash, or severe or bloody diarrhoea.

Precautions and warnings

• Tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to penicillin, cephalosporins or any other antibiotic.
• Finish the full course your doctor prescribes, even if you feel better earlier. Stopping early can let the infection return and makes resistance more likely.
• Let your doctor know if you have kidney disease, as the dose may need to be adjusted.
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use Ziac DS only after speaking to your doctor.
• Do not share your antibiotics with others or keep leftover medicine for future use.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed and do not use it after the expiry date or the period stated on the label once opened. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
