Uses of Empagen L 5/25mg Tablet
Empagen L 5/25mg Tablet is used in adults with type 2 diabetes to improve blood sugar control, together with diet and exercise, when metformin or another medicine alone has not been enough. Combining two medicines in one tablet keeps treatment simple. Empagliflozin has also been shown to reduce the risk of death from heart disease in people with type 2 diabetes who already have heart and blood vessel disease.
How Empagen L 5/25mg Tablet works
Empagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor that makes the kidneys remove extra sugar from the blood through the urine. Linagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that boosts natural gut hormones after meals, so the pancreas releases more insulin and the liver makes less sugar. Together they lower blood sugar in two complementary ways.

- Genital thrush (fungal infection)
- Urinary tract infections
- Passing more urine
- Thirst
- Cold-like symptoms such as a sore throat or stuffy nose
Get urgent help for nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, unusual tiredness or fast breathing, as these can be signs of ketoacidosis even when blood sugar is not very high. Severe stomach pain spreading to the back, or pain, redness and swelling around the genitals with fever, also need prompt medical attention.
Precautions and warnings
- Drink enough fluids, and ask your doctor about pausing it if you are unwell with vomiting, diarrhoea or dehydration, or before major surgery.
- Low blood sugar is more likely if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, so your doctor may adjust those medicines.
- Keep the genital area clean and dry to lower the risk of fungal infections.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, a history of pancreatitis, or follow a very low-carbohydrate diet.
- It is not used for type 1 diabetes and is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
