Ibuprofen: Uses, Side Effects & Brands in Pakistan

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for pain, fever and inflammation. In Pakistan it is sold as tablets, suspensions for children and gels, under brand names such as Brufen and many others.

How Ibuprofen works

Ibuprofen blocks enzymes called COX that the body uses to make prostaglandins, the chemicals that cause pain, swelling and fever. Lowering them eases pain and brings down temperature.

What is Ibuprofen used for?

  • Headache, toothache and period pain
  • Muscle aches, sprains and back pain
  • Fever in adults and children
  • Pain and swelling from arthritis
  • Gels: local muscle and joint pain

Side effects of Ibuprofen

Not everyone gets side effects. The ones reported more often are:

  • Indigestion, heartburn or stomach pain
  • Nausea or diarrhoea
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Fluid retention

Stop taking it and get medical help if you pass black or bloody stools, vomit blood, have chest pain, worsening breathing or asthma, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Precautions and warnings

  • Do not use ibuprofen if dengue is suspected. NSAIDs can increase the risk of bleeding, so paracetamol is used for dengue fever instead.
  • Avoid it if you have had a stomach ulcer or bleeding, or if aspirin or other NSAIDs have triggered asthma or an allergic reaction.
  • Talk to a doctor first if you have heart, kidney or liver disease, or high blood pressure.
  • Children who are dehydrated (for example with vomiting or diarrhoea) are at higher risk of kidney problems from ibuprofen.
  • Avoid it in the later stages of pregnancy, and ask your doctor before using it at any stage.

Frequently asked questions about Ibuprofen

Can I take ibuprofen in dengue?

No. Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs are avoided in dengue because they can make bleeding more likely. Paracetamol is the usual choice for fever and body aches, and a doctor should monitor dengue.

Can ibuprofen and paracetamol be taken together?

They work in different ways and are sometimes used together or alternately for short periods. Check with a doctor or pharmacist first, especially for children, so the doses and timing are right.
