Uses of BCG Vaccine Injection

BCG Vaccine Injection is given to protect against tuberculosis (TB). In Pakistan it is part of the routine childhood immunisation programme and is usually given soon after birth. It is particularly effective at preventing the most severe forms of TB in young children, such as TB meningitis and widespread disease, although it gives less complete protection against lung TB in adults.

How BCG Vaccine Injection works

• As a live vaccine, it should not be given to people with a weakened immune system, such as from HIV infection, cancer treatment or strong immune-suppressing medicines.
• Keep the injection site clean and dry, and do not cover it tightly or apply creams to it.
• It is not given during pregnancy.
• The vaccine is stored in a refrigerator and protected from light until use.
