Uses of Betagan Drops

Betagan Drops eye drops are used to lower raised pressure inside the eye in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension (high eye pressure without nerve damage yet). Keeping eye pressure under control helps protect the optic nerve and reduces the risk of gradual, permanent sight loss. The drops do not reverse vision that has already been lost, so they are used long term to prevent further damage.

How Betagan Drops works

Levobunolol is a beta-blocker that reduces the amount of watery fluid (aqueous humour) produced inside the eye. With less fluid being made, the pressure in the eye falls. A small amount can be absorbed into the bloodstream, which is why it can sometimes affect the heart and lungs.

Possible side effects

Betagan Drops is usually well tolerated, although some people notice:

• Stinging or burning when the drops go in
• Eye redness or irritation
• Dry eyes
• Blurred vision for a short time after use
• Headache

Get medical help promptly if you develop wheezing or breathlessness, a very slow or irregular heartbeat, fainting, or a painful red eye with swelling or discharge.

Precautions and warnings

• Tell your doctor if you have asthma, COPD or other breathing problems, as beta-blocker eye drops can trigger wheezing and are usually avoided in asthma.
• Let your doctor know about heart problems such as a slow heartbeat, heart block or heart failure, and about diabetes, as it can mask the warning signs of low blood sugar.
• Mention any beta-blocker or heart-rate medicines you already take by mouth, such as atenolol, propranolol, verapamil or diltiazem.
• After putting in the drops, close your eye and press gently on the inner corner for about a minute to reduce how much reaches the rest of the body.
• Glaucoma often causes no symptoms, so keep using the drops as prescribed and attend regular eye pressure checks. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss it with your doctor first.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed and do not use it after the expiry date or the period stated on the label once opened. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
