Diosecta 3 gm Powder contains Diosmectite 3g, an anti-diarrhoea clay (adsorbent). Made by Wood Wards, it is used for acute diarrhoea and diarrhoea in children. Pack size: 30 sachet powder.

Uses of Diosecta 3 gm Powder

Diosecta 3 gm Powder is used to reduce how often stools are passed and how watery they are in acute diarrhoea in adults and children. It is given alongside oral rehydration solution (ORS), which remains the most important treatment for preventing dehydration. It may also be used for some longer-lasting functional diarrhoea. It does not replace fluids and it is not an antibiotic.

How Diosecta 3 gm Powder works

Diosmectite is a natural clay made of aluminium and magnesium silicate. It forms a protective layer over the lining of the gut and binds water, toxins, bacteria and viruses in the bowel, which are then passed out in the stools. It is not absorbed into the bloodstream.

Possible side effects

Because it stays in the gut, Diosecta 3 gm Powder has few side effects. The most likely are:

• Constipation
• Bloating or wind
• Nausea
• Unpleasant taste

See a doctor urgently for blood or mucus in the stools, high fever, persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration such as passing very little urine, sunken eyes or unusual drowsiness, especially in a child.

Precautions and warnings

• Keep giving ORS and fluids, as preventing dehydration is the main priority, especially in babies and young children.
• Leave a gap of about two hours between Diosecta 3 gm Powder and other medicines, as it can reduce their absorption.
• Tell your doctor if you have a history of severe constipation.
• As a precaution, some regulators advise against its use in children under two and in pregnant or breastfeeding women, so check with a doctor first.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it in the original pack until use. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
