Glixim DS

Glixim DS is a suspension made by Glit Pharma that contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used for typhoid fever, urinary tract infections, throat and tonsil infections, ear infections, chest infections and uncomplicated gonorrhoea. Pack size: 30ml suspension.

Uses of Glixim DS

Glixim DS is used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to cefixime. In Pakistan it is widely prescribed for typhoid fever, and it is also used for urinary tract infections, sore throat and tonsillitis, middle ear infections, bronchitis and some sexually transmitted infections. It does not work against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How Glixim DS works

Cefixime stops bacteria from building their protective cell wall. Without a stable wall the bacteria break down and die, which allows the body to clear the infection. Symptoms often start to improve within a few days, but the infection is only fully treated when the whole course is finished.

Possible side effects

Most people take Glixim DS without problems. The more common side effects are usually mild and include:

• Loose stools or diarrhoea
• Stomach pain or indigestion
• Nausea
• Headache
• Mild skin rash or itching

Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you notice swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, a severe rash, or severe or bloody diarrhoea.

Precautions and warnings

• Tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to penicillin, cephalosporins or any other antibiotic.
• Finish the full course your doctor prescribes, even if you feel better earlier. Stopping early can let the infection return and makes resistance more likely.
• Let your doctor know if you have kidney disease, as the dose may need to be adjusted.
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use Glixim DS only after speaking to your doctor.
• Do not share your antibiotics with others or keep leftover medicine for future use.

Storage

Store the dry powder below 30°C in a dry place. Once mixed with water, follow the storage and discard instructions printed on the pack, and shake well before each use. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
