Uses of Lomotil Tablet

Lomotil Tablet is used for the short-term relief of diarrhoea in adults, alongside plenty of fluids or oral rehydration solution to replace what has been lost. It reduces how often you need to go and makes stools firmer. It is not meant for diarrhoea caused by bacterial infection with fever or blood in the stool, where slowing the bowel can do more harm than good.

How Lomotil Tablet works

Diphenoxylate is related to the opioids and acts on the gut wall to slow the movement of the bowel, giving more time for water to be absorbed. A very small amount of atropine is added to discourage taking more than prescribed, as excess amounts cause unpleasant effects.

Possible side effects

Some people feel drowsy or notice a dry mouth while taking Lomotil Tablet. Other side effects can include:

• Constipation

Precautions and warnings

• It is not suitable for young children, who are more sensitive to its effects; keep it well out of their reach.
• Do not take more than prescribed, as it can be habit-forming if taken in large amounts.
• Tell your doctor if you have ulcerative colitis, liver disease, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or diarrhoea that started after antibiotics.
• Avoid alcohol and other sedating medicines, and do not drive if you feel drowsy.
• Keep up your fluids, and see a doctor if diarrhoea lasts more than a couple of days or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it in the original pack until use. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
