Uses of Minicol Drop

Minicol Drop is used to relieve trapped wind, bloating and the discomfort that comes with them. It is commonly given as drops for babies with colic and is also found in many antacid and indigestion products for adults. It is sometimes used before abdominal scans to reduce gas in the gut.

How Minicol Drop works

Simethicone (also called simeticone) works by changing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines. Small bubbles join together into larger ones that are easier to pass as wind or burping. It is not absorbed into the body.

Possible side effects

Minicol Drop is very well tolerated, and side effects are rare. Occasionally people notice:

• Mild nausea
• Constipation
• Loose stools
• Skin rash or itching (rare)

See a doctor urgently if there is severe or persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in the stools, or, in a baby, fever, poor feeding or unusual floppiness.

Precautions and warnings

• Use the product made for the right age group, and follow the pack directions or your pharmacist’s advice.
• Crying in babies has many causes; speak to a doctor if colic does not improve or your baby seems unwell.
• If you take thyroid medicine (levothyroxine), ask your pharmacist about spacing the two apart.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed and do not use it after the expiry date or the period stated on the label once opened. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
