Uses of Mupir Ointment

Mupir Ointment is used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, infected cuts, grazes and small wounds, and infected hair follicles (folliculitis). A nasal form is used in hospitals to clear Staphylococcus aureus, including MRSA, from the nose before surgery or to stop it spreading. It is meant for short courses on small areas of skin rather than large wounds or burns.

How Mupir Ointment works

Mupirocin blocks an enzyme that bacteria need to build proteins. Without new proteins the bacteria cannot grow or multiply, and the infection clears. It works mainly against staphylococci and streptococci, which cause most skin infections, and it has no effect on fungal or viral infections.

Possible side effects

Mupir Ointment is usually well tolerated, though some people get mild reactions where it is applied, such as:

• Burning or stinging
• Itching
• Redness
• Dry skin

Precautions and warnings

Storage

Store below 30°C and keep the cap tightly closed. For external use only; avoid contact with the eyes unless the product is made for eye use. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
