Uses of Prometh 5mg|5ml Syrup

Prometh 5mg|5ml Syrup is used to relieve allergic conditions such as hay fever, hives, itchy skin and reactions to insect bites. Because it also settles the stomach, it is used for nausea, vomiting and travel sickness. Its sedating effect makes it useful as a short-term aid for sleep problems, and it is included in some cough and cold syrups to calm a troublesome night-time cough.

How Prometh 5mg|5ml Syrup works

Promethazine blocks histamine, the chemical released during allergic reactions, which reduces itching, sneezing and swelling. It also acts on the brain’s vomiting and balance centres and passes easily into the brain, which explains both its anti-sickness effect and the drowsiness it causes.

Possible side effects

Drowsiness is expected with Prometh 5mg|5ml Syrup and may last into the next day. Other common effects are:

• It must not be given to children under two, as it can dangerously slow their breathing, and it is used with caution in older children.
• Avoid alcohol, and do not drive or use machinery if you feel drowsy, including the morning after taking it at night.
• Tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, prostate problems, difficulty passing urine, epilepsy, asthma or liver disease.

• Ask your doctor before using it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Storage
