Uses of Zolint 60ml Syrup

Zolint 60ml Syrup is used to treat infectious diarrhoea and dysentery caused by certain bacteria and parasites, including amoebic dysentery and giardiasis. These infections can cause loose or bloody stools, stomach cramps and fever. It does not treat diarrhoea caused by viruses, and replacing lost fluids with ORS remains an important part of treatment.

How Zolint 60ml Syrup works

Furazolidone is an antibacterial that damages the genetic material of a range of gut bacteria and some parasites. Metronidazole is taken up by anaerobic bacteria and parasites such as Entamoeba and Giardia, where it breaks down their DNA and kills them.

Possible side effects

Some people notice side effects while taking Zolint 60ml Syrup. The more common ones are:

• Nausea or vomiting
• Metallic taste in the mouth
• Loss of appetite
• Headache
• Darker or brownish urine

Seek medical help urgently if you have numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, fits, confusion, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Precautions and warnings

• Do not drink alcohol while taking it and for at least 48 hours afterwards, as it can cause severe flushing, vomiting and a racing heart.
• Tell your doctor if you have G6PD deficiency, liver disease or a nervous system disorder, and mention any antidepressants or other regular medicines.
• Furazolidone can interact with foods rich in tyramine, such as aged cheese, so ask your pharmacist about foods to limit during treatment.
• Keep drinking fluids or ORS, and finish the course your doctor prescribes.
• Ask your doctor before use in pregnancy, breastfeeding or in young infants.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed and do not use it after the expiry date or the period stated on the label once opened. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
