Uses of Ampicillin 500mg Injection

Ampicillin 500mg Injection is used to treat a range of bacterial infections, including chest infections, urinary tract infections, ear and sinus infections, and infections inside the abdomen. In hospital it is often given by injection, sometimes with other antibiotics, for serious infections such as meningitis and infections in newborn babies. It only works against bacteria and is not effective for colds, flu or other viral illnesses.

Ampicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that prevents bacteria from building their cell walls. As they try to grow and divide without a proper wall, the bacteria burst and die, allowing the immune system to clear the infection.

• Tell your doctor if you have glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis) or leukaemia, as ampicillin very often causes a rash in these conditions.
• Let your doctor know about kidney disease and about other medicines such as methotrexate, allopurinol or warfarin.
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use it only on your doctor’s advice.
