Hepa-Merz 300mg/5ml Syrup contains L-Ornithine L-Aspartate 300mg/5ml, an amino acid medicine that lowers ammonia in liver disease. Made by Brookes Pharmaceutical Labs (pak) Ltd, it is prescribed for hepatic encephalopathy, cirrhosis and liver disease with high ammonia. Pack size: 120ml syrup.

Uses of Hepa-Merz 300mg/5ml Syrup

Hepa-Merz 300mg/5ml Syrup is used in people with chronic liver disease, such as cirrhosis, to lower high blood ammonia levels. Raised ammonia can affect the brain and cause hepatic encephalopathy, with confusion, sleepiness, poor concentration and personality changes. It is given as an infusion in hospital or as granules by mouth, usually alongside other treatments such as lactulose.

How Hepa-Merz 300mg/5ml Syrup works

L-ornithine and L-aspartate are amino acids that feed the body’s own ammonia-clearing pathways. They help the liver turn ammonia into urea, which is passed out in the urine, and help muscles bind ammonia into glutamine. This lowers the amount of ammonia reaching the brain.

Possible side effects

Side effects with Hepa-Merz 300mg/5ml Syrup are uncommon and mostly mild. They can include:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Stomach discomfort
• Wind or bloating
• Diarrhoea

Seek urgent help for increasing confusion, extreme drowsiness, vomiting blood or black stools, as these can signal worsening liver disease or bleeding.

Precautions and warnings
