Co-Amoxiclav: Uses, Side Effects & Brands in Pakistan

Co-amoxiclav combines the antibiotic amoxicillin with clavulanic acid. It is one of the most prescribed antibiotics in Pakistan, sold as tablets, suspensions and injections under brands such as Augmentin, Amclav and many others.

How Co-Amoxiclav works

Some bacteria make an enzyme that destroys amoxicillin. Clavulanic acid blocks that enzyme, so amoxicillin can kill a wider range of bacteria.

What is Co-Amoxiclav used for?

  • Sinusitis and middle ear infections
  • Chest infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin infections, including infected animal and human bites
  • Dental abscesses

Side effects of Co-Amoxiclav

Not everyone gets side effects. The ones reported more often are:

  • Diarrhoea, more often than with amoxicillin alone
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Vaginal thrush
  • Skin rash

Stop it and get urgent help for signs of a serious allergic reaction. Also contact a doctor about yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe or bloody diarrhoea.

Precautions and warnings

  • Do not take it if you are allergic to penicillin.
  • Take it at the start of a meal to reduce stomach upset and help absorption.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had liver problems with this medicine before, or have liver or kidney disease.
  • Finish the full course and do not use it for colds or flu.
  • It is often used in pregnancy when needed, but tell your doctor.
