Uses of Clenil Compositum 10s

Clenil Compositum 10s inhalers are used regularly to prevent asthma symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and breathlessness, and to reduce the risk of asthma attacks. They are known as ‘preventer’ inhalers and work gradually, so they do not relieve sudden symptoms; a reliever inhaler such as salbutamol is needed for that. Some combination inhalers containing beclometasone are also used in COPD.

How Clenil Compositum 10s works

Beclometasone (beclomethasone) is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and swelling in the lining of the airways. Over time this makes the airways less sensitive and less likely to narrow in response to triggers such as allergens, cold air or infections. Because it is inhaled, it acts directly in the lungs with much less reaching the rest of the body.

Possible side effects

Side effects of Clenil Compositum 10s mainly affect the mouth and throat. The more common include:

• Hoarse voice
• Oral thrush (white patches in the mouth)
• Sore throat
• Cough after inhaling
• Headache

Seek urgent medical help if your breathing becomes much worse, your reliever is not helping, or you develop swelling of the face or throat. Also see a doctor if you notice blurred vision.

Precautions and warnings

• Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after each use, or use a spacer, to reduce the risk of hoarseness and oral thrush.
• Keep using Clenil Compositum 10s regularly even when you feel well, and do not stop suddenly without advice. Ask your pharmacist or doctor to check your inhaler technique.
• Different brands of beclometasone inhaler are not always equivalent in strength, so do not switch brands unless your doctor advises.
• Tell your doctor if you have had tuberculosis. Children on long-term treatment should have their growth checked.
• Inhaled steroids are generally continued in pregnancy and breastfeeding, because uncontrolled asthma carries greater risks, but let your doctor know if you are pregnant.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed and do not use it after the expiry date or the period stated on the label once opened. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
