Uses of Diane 35 Tab

Diane 35 Tab is used in women to treat moderate to severe acne and excess facial or body hair caused by sensitivity to male hormones (androgens), often in the setting of polycystic ovary syndrome. It is usually prescribed when antibiotics or creams have not worked. It also prevents pregnancy, so it must not be taken with another hormonal contraceptive.

How Diane 35 Tab works

Cyproterone acetate blocks the effects of androgens on the skin and hair follicles, reducing oil production and unwanted hair growth. Ethinylestradiol is an oestrogen that lowers androgen production by the ovaries and keeps the menstrual cycle regular. Together they also stop ovulation.

Possible side effects

Some women notice side effects with Diane 35 Tab, particularly in the first few months. These may include:

• Nausea
• Breast tenderness
• Headache
• Spotting or bleeding between periods
• Mood changes
• Weight changes

Get emergency medical help if you notice pain or swelling in one leg, sudden chest pain or breathlessness, coughing up blood, a severe or unusual headache, sudden weakness or numbness, problems with speech or vision, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Precautions and warnings

• Diane 35 Tab increases the risk of blood clots. Tell your doctor if you or a close relative have had a blood clot, or if you have heart disease, high blood pressure or migraine with aura.
• It is not usually suitable for women who smoke and are over 35, or who are very overweight, because the clot risk is higher.
• Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, breast cancer, diabetes or depression, and mention medicines for epilepsy, tuberculosis (rifampicin), HIV and St John’s wort, as they can reduce its effect.
• Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Your doctor should review treatment regularly and advise when to stop once your skin or hair has improved.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it in the original pack until use. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
