How Ethrane 99% Liquid works

Enflurane is absorbed through the lungs into the blood and acts on the brain and spinal cord, dampening nerve signals so that the patient stays unconscious and does not respond to pain. When the vapour is switched off, it is breathed out and the patient wakes up.

Possible side effects

Ethrane 99% Liquid is used under constant monitoring, but effects seen during or after anaesthesia include:

• Nausea or vomiting on waking
• Shivering
• Drowsiness or confusion after surgery
• Slowed breathing

The anaesthetist watches closely for rare but serious problems such as a sudden rise in body temperature with muscle rigidity (malignant hyperthermia), fits or an irregular heartbeat, and treats them immediately.

• It is given only in an operating theatre by trained anaesthetists who monitor breathing, heart rate and blood pressure throughout.
• Tell the team if you or a family member have ever had a reaction to anaesthesia, especially malignant hyperthermia.
• Mention any history of epilepsy or fits, as enflurane can trigger seizure-like activity, and any kidney or liver disease.
• Tell the team about all medicines you take and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Do not drive, use machinery or drink alcohol until you have fully recovered from the anaesthetic, as advised by the hospital.
