Uses of Mucolator Sachet 200mg

Mucolator Sachet 200mg is used to loosen thick, sticky mucus in chest conditions such as chronic bronchitis and COPD, making it easier to cough up; effervescent tablets and sachets are commonly used for this. Given as an infusion in hospital, it is also the standard antidote for paracetamol overdose, where prompt treatment protects the liver from serious damage.

How Mucolator Sachet 200mg works

Acetylcysteine breaks the chemical bonds that hold mucus proteins together, so mucus becomes thinner and easier to clear. In paracetamol overdose it works differently: it restores glutathione, which the liver uses to neutralise a toxic by-product of paracetamol, preventing liver damage.

Possible side effects

When used for mucus, Mucolator Sachet 200mg rarely causes problems. Possible side effects include:

• Nausea or vomiting
• Heartburn or stomach upset
• Diarrhoea
• Unpleasant taste or smell

Get urgent medical help for wheezing or chest tightness, swelling of the face or throat, or a widespread rash, which can occur especially with the hospital infusion.

Precautions and warnings

• Tell your doctor if you have asthma or a history of stomach ulcers, as it can rarely trigger wheezing or irritate the stomach.
• Dissolve effervescent tablets and sachets fully in water before drinking.
