Uses of Rifin Forte Tablet

Rifin Forte Tablet is used in the first, intensive phase of treatment for tuberculosis (TB), usually for the first couple of months. Combining four medicines in one tablet makes the course easier to follow and helps prevent the bacteria becoming resistant. It is followed by a continuation phase with fewer medicines. TB treatment must be taken every day exactly as prescribed to work.

How Rifin Forte Tablet works

Each ingredient attacks TB bacteria differently. Rifampicin blocks bacterial RNA production, isoniazid stops them building their cell wall, pyrazinamide kills slow-growing bacteria hidden inside cells, and ethambutol also disrupts the cell wall. Together they kill the bacteria and prevent resistance.

Possible side effects

Many people complete treatment with Rifin Forte Tablet without major problems. Common effects include:

• Orange-red urine, sweat and tears
• Nausea or loss of appetite
• Joint pain
• Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
• Itching or mild rash
• Stomach upset

Stop and contact your TB doctor straight away if you develop yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, persistent vomiting, blurred vision or difficulty telling red from green, or a severe rash.

Precautions and warnings

• Take it every day for the whole course; missing doses or stopping early can lead to drug-resistant TB.
• Liver tests are needed, especially if you have liver disease or drink alcohol; avoid alcohol during treatment.
• Rifampicin reduces the effect of many medicines, including hormonal contraceptives, warfarin, diabetes and HIV medicines; use a non-hormonal method of contraception.
• Report any change in your eyesight promptly, as ethambutol can affect the optic nerve.
• Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; TB treatment is usually continued under close supervision.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it in the original pack until use. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
