Uses of Tri Lite Cream

Tri Lite Cream is used for short courses to treat moderate to severe melasma of the face, the patchy brown or grey-brown pigmentation often triggered by sun exposure, pregnancy or hormonal contraception. It lightens the dark patches gradually over several weeks. It is not intended for long-term maintenance, and strict sun protection is needed both during and after treatment to help stop melasma returning.

How Tri Lite Cream works

Hydroquinone reduces melanin production by blocking tyrosinase, the enzyme pigment cells use to make it. Tretinoin speeds up skin cell turnover, so pigmented cells are shed faster and hydroquinone penetrates better. Fluocinolone acetonide is a corticosteroid that calms the irritation the other two ingredients can cause.

Possible side effects

Skin reactions are common with Tri Lite Cream, especially in the early weeks, and include:

• Redness
• Peeling or dryness
• Burning or stinging
• Itching
• Acne-like spots
• Increased sensitivity to sunlight

Stop using it and contact your doctor if you develop severe redness, blistering, swelling or a crusting rash, or if the skin darkens to a bluish-black colour (ochronosis).

Precautions and warnings

• Tri Lite Cream is meant for short-term use only, generally up to about eight weeks, because prolonged use of the steroid can thin the skin and prolonged hydroquinone use can cause ochronosis.
• Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and avoid strong sunlight, as tretinoin makes skin more sensitive to the sun and sun exposure worsens melasma.
• Do not use it during pregnancy or while trying to conceive, and speak to your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
• Keep it away from the eyes, lips, nostrils and broken or eczema-affected skin, and avoid harsh soaps, peels or other irritating products at the same time.
• Tell your doctor if you have a sulfite allergy, as some formulations contain sodium metabisulfite.

Storage

Store below 30°C and keep the cap tightly closed. For external use only; avoid contact with the eyes unless the product is made for eye use. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
