Uses of Phenergan Elixir

Phenergan Elixir is used to relieve allergic conditions such as hay fever, hives, itchy skin and reactions to insect bites. Because it also settles the stomach, it is used for nausea, vomiting and travel sickness. Its sedating effect makes it useful as a short-term aid for sleep problems, and it is included in some cough and cold syrups to calm a troublesome night-time cough.

How Phenergan Elixir works

Promethazine blocks histamine, the chemical released during allergic reactions, which reduces itching, sneezing and swelling. It also acts on the brain’s vomiting and balance centres and passes easily into the brain, which explains both its anti-sickness effect and the drowsiness it causes.

• Tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, prostate problems, difficulty passing urine, epilepsy, asthma or liver disease.
• Do not combine it with other sedating medicines or antihistamines unless a doctor has advised it.
• Ask your doctor before using it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed and do not use it after the expiry date or the period stated on the label once opened. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
