Isotretinoin: Uses, Side Effects & Brands in Pakistan

Isotretinoin is a vitamin A-derived medicine for acne. In Pakistan it comes in two very different forms: gels and creams applied to the skin for mild to moderate acne, and capsules taken by mouth for severe acne under a dermatologist’s care.

How Isotretinoin works

Isotretinoin shrinks the oil glands in the skin and stops pores from clogging. Capsules act throughout the body and can clear severe acne for the long term, while gels work only where applied.

What is Isotretinoin used for?

  • Gel or cream: mild to moderate acne with blackheads, whiteheads and spots
  • Capsules: severe, nodular or scarring acne that has not responded to other treatments

Side effects of Isotretinoin

Not everyone gets side effects. The ones reported more often are:

  • Dry, peeling or irritated skin
  • Dry, cracked lips (very common with capsules)
  • Dry eyes and nose, nosebleeds
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Capsules: muscle or joint aches

With capsules, contact a doctor straight away about low mood, anxiety or thoughts of self-harm, severe headache with blurred vision, severe stomach pain, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Precautions and warnings

  • Isotretinoin capsules cause severe birth defects. They must never be taken during pregnancy, and women must use effective contraception before, during and for a month after treatment.
  • Capsules should only be started and monitored by a doctor, usually with blood tests for liver and cholesterol.
  • Do not take vitamin A supplements or certain antibiotics such as tetracyclines with capsules.
  • Do not donate blood during treatment, and avoid waxing or laser treatment.
  • Use sunscreen and moisturiser with both gels and capsules.
