Aspirin: Uses, Side Effects & Brands in Pakistan

Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is one of the oldest medicines in use. In Pakistan, low-strength tablets such as Loprin and Disprin CV are widely used to protect the heart, while higher strengths relieve pain and fever.

How Aspirin works

At low strength, aspirin stops platelets in the blood from sticking together, which lowers the chance of clots forming in the heart or brain. At higher strength it also reduces pain, fever and inflammation.

What is Aspirin used for?

  • Preventing heart attack and stroke in people who have heart disease, as prescribed by a doctor
  • After a heart attack, stent or certain types of stroke
  • Relief of pain and fever in adults

Side effects of Aspirin

Not everyone gets side effects. The ones reported more often are:

  • Indigestion or stomach upset
  • Bruising or bleeding more easily
  • Nosebleeds or bleeding gums

Get medical help straight away if you pass black or bloody stools, vomit blood, have severe stomach pain, or develop wheezing or swelling after taking it.

Precautions and warnings

  • Do not give aspirin to children under 16, because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome.
  • Do not take it if dengue is suspected, as it increases bleeding.
  • Do not start daily aspirin for prevention on your own. For many people without heart disease, the bleeding risk outweighs the benefit.
  • Do not stop prescribed aspirin before surgery or dental work unless your doctor advises it.
  • Avoid it if you have a stomach ulcer, bleeding disorder or asthma triggered by aspirin.

Frequently asked questions about Aspirin

Should I take aspirin every day to prevent a heart attack?

Only if a doctor prescribes it. Daily aspirin helps people who already have heart disease, but for many healthy people the risk of bleeding is greater than the benefit.

Can aspirin be taken for fever in dengue?

No. Aspirin increases the risk of bleeding in dengue. Paracetamol is used instead.
